When most people think of book design, they imagine the cover—the visual hook that grabs a reader’s attention. But just as important is what’s inside the book. That’s where book interior design comes in.
As a seasoned book designer and author, I’ve spent years helping writers transform raw manuscripts into beautifully formatted books that meet industry standards and enhance the reading experience. If you’re getting ready to publish—whether independently or through a traditional press—here’s what you need to know about interior design, and how I can help.
So, What Is Book Interior Design?
Book interior design is the process of styling, laying out, and typesetting the text and visuals within your book. It’s more than just making the inside look attractive—it's about creating a smooth, readable, and professional experience for your audience.
This involves:
Structuring chapters and sections
Choosing fonts and margins
Adjusting line spacing and alignment
Placing images and graphics
Applying print-safe formatting rules
Preparing files for platforms like KDP, IngramSpark, or Kindle
Whether your book is a novel, memoir, poetry collection, nonfiction guide, children’s book, or a visually rich project like a cookbook or art book—the design must reflect the genre and serve the reader.
Why Interior Design Matters
You’ve worked hard to write your book—don’t let poor formatting undermine its quality.
I provide properly formatted files for:
Amazon KDP (paperback & eBook)
IngramSpark
Barnes & Noble Press
Kindle/Nook/iBooks
PDF and EPUB formats
You’ll receive a professionally formatted, fully compliant file ready for upload—plus a preview to review before we finalize.
My Interior Design Process: Making Your Book Look Great
Each book is different and; therefore, gets its own special touch—and I treat it that way. My interior design process is a thoughtful, collaborative journey where your vision and my expertise meet to create a layout that is both functional and visually refined.
Here’s how we’ll work together:
1. Manuscript Review & Creative Brief
Once you submit your fully edited manuscript, I’ll ask you to complete a short design questionnaire. This gives me insight into the tone, genre, and mood of your book. You can also upload any images, charts, or specific formatting references you’d like me to include.
2. Planning the Layout
Based on your genre and goals, I’ll plan the structure of your book—deciding on font choices, spacing, margins, visual hierarchy, and chapter formatting. I consider both aesthetic design and technical requirements for print or digital platforms.
3. Custom Typesetting & Design
Using Adobe InDesign, the industry-standard layout tool, I’ll begin designing your interior pages from scratch—no templates involved. I tailor the layout to your content, ensuring readability, consistency, and genre-appropriate styling across every page.
4. Proofing & Revisions
Once the layout is complete, I’ll send you a PDF proof for review. This is your chance to give feedback, request tweaks, and approve the design before final files are prepared. I include one round of revisions as part of every package to ensure the result aligns with your expectations.
5. Final File Delivery
After your approval, I’ll deliver final, publication-ready files—whether for print (PDF/X-1a or print-ready PDF) or eBook (EPUB, MOBI, or KDP-specific formats). These files will meet the specifications of major platforms like Amazon KDP, IngramSpark, Barnes & Noble Press, and others.
6. Support & Follow-Up
I remain available for any post-design support, including additional format conversions or minor layout adjustments, if needed. Your success matters to me, and I stand behind every book I design.
In brief:
Submit your final manuscript (fully edited)
Fill out a short design brief to tell me about your vision
Share any images or graphics you want to include
I’ll send you a PDF proof to review
Final adjustments made (if needed), and you get ready-to-publish files
Note: Interior design does not include editing or proofreading. Please ensure your manuscript is final before submission. Editorial services are available separately.
